Horse care

September 30th, 2008

Horse care is one of the important aspects involved while looking after a horse. Once you have bought your ideal horse, his health will be one of the important factors that you need to consider. These are the main things that need to be kept in mind for horse care:

  • Living environment – the very first important factor that needs to be dealt with is the basic living environment. Horses are generally kept in barn or shed, to protect them from wind and precipitation. They should have access to fresh & clean water all the time along with adequate forage. During winters, make sure to provide horse blanket to protect the horse from cold weather. In summers, shade is well advised.
  • Feeding – best practice to maintain good horse health is to feed the horse twice or thrice daily. Forages like grass, grain, or hay can be fed to horses. The average body weight of a riding horse needs to be around 1000 pounds.
  • Grooming – a healthy horse can look more attractive through proper grooming. A horse should be always groomed at least before it is ridden to evade injuries and chafing. Nowadays markets are flooded with numerous equine products such as Curry, Dandy brush, Body brush, Grooming rag or towel, Mane brush or comb, Hoof pick, fly spray, Sweat or Water Scraper available in many colors.
  • Veterinary care – horses are prone to many skin and health diseases like colic, laminitis, and inner parasites. These health problems can be kept at bay by routine check up and proper vaccination.

Martingales for your horse!

September 30th, 2008

Horse Martingales refers to the several designs of tacks. These tacks are used on the horse so it can control its head carriage. There are several types of martingales that come under the category of equestrian products. If some are used for riding, then some are used for driving. There are some rules for using these tacks. These rules can vary according to the schooling methods of the horses.

There are two types of horse martingale that are used in general: Standing and running. These are used for controlling the horse’s head height. It also prevents the horse from throwing its head high and thus hitting the rider. As the horse tries getting its head much higher, the martingale put pressure on the head to prevent the horse from raising it.

The standing martingale is perfect for your horse as it has a single strap attached to the girth. The strap passes between the front legs of the horse. It remains fixed to the back of the noseband of the horse. If the variation is correctly fitted, then it should be able to push the martingale strap up to the throatlatch of the horse.

Martingales have some safety and misuse issues that need to be considered. For example, standing martingales are limiting. The running martingales tend to be more convenient. Standing martingales cannot be loosened if an emergency arises. These standing tacks are used for jumping over smaller fences. Moreover, the horse with a standing martingale can easily trip and fall as the movement is restricted.

The most important care to be taken with martingales is that it should never be attached to a drop noseband. This can result in the injury to both nose and jaw of the horse. The horse can also get hurt the cartilage of its nose. Care should also be taken while tying the martingale to the heavier strap and not the lower strap. Get some quality martingales for your horse and make sure you use them carefully.

Along with saddlery products like saddle pads, horse rugs, saddle girths, horse tack, and blankets, horse boots are equally important for offering a complete horse care. There are different types of Horse Boots available in the market. Some of the types include tendon boots, splint boots, shin boots, event boots, turnout boots and paddock boots. This bone is more prominent in younger horses. It can easily get damaged ad thus needs protection. Shin boots are another type of boot that protects the horse from getting hurt in knuckle, calf and tendon. Trotting horses that generally pull sulkies are protected with shin boots.

Boots are also helpful in protecting the horse’s leg during practicing and actual racing. Equestrian products generally range from saddle pads, saddlery products, horse rugs, saddle girths, horse tack, horse clothing, horse blankets, horse boots, and much more! But all these products become baseless if you don’t know how to properly take care of your horse. The care that your horse need covers a wide range of topics like shelter, food and other required supplies. These supplies are important for your horses’ overall health. These supplies generally range from bridles, crops, brushes, horse shoes, and saddles etc. With a variety of clothing options available in the market, one must know what perfectly suits your horse and its breed.

Bridles are one of the most important horse products to look out for. A horse rider should definitely spend a good amount of time in choosing a perfect bridle for his horse. Horse bridle is a way to get connected to your horse in a special way. One of the most common types of bridle is the Dressage bridle. This bridle is the one that fits over the head of the horse. There are ample of options available for the quality and price ranges for the bridles. The leather used in the bridle should be of good quality. Do not compromise on bad quality leathers as they tend to crack and wear off easily. This generally happens during bad and harsh weather. Always make sure about some points before starting to ride your horse. You should check the reins and make sure that they aren’t easily breakable. Synthetic leather is another good option that comes as lightweight and easy to maintain. THE GAITS OF THE HORSE

August 18th, 2008

Though Horse Rugs, Blankets, Clothing, Head Collars, Bridles, Reins, Breast Girths, Martingles are equally important, but saddles have always remained the hot favorite among the equestrian products. Get some quality equestrian products for your horse. Make it feel the horse power!  It’s you who know what’s best for your beloved horse.

There are different types of Saddles available in the market. Your horse will be pretty happy with this wide range. Through the ages, saddles have been developed and built in diverse ways. The frame of the saddle is called tree and is made of wood, steel, and sometimes a combination of both. The rigid frame of the saddle comes well padded and covered with leather. It is attached with one or more broad straps called girths. This girth is for a purpose. It passes under the horse’s body and is fastened at the opposite sides. A leather strap is also suspended from the sides of a saddle for a stirrup.

Saddles are made to be curved on the underside of a horse’s back and on the top side to fit the horse rider’s body. Special care should be taken to fit the saddle properly to the horse so the rider’s weight is balanced and centered on the horse. This weight shouldn’t come on the withers or the spine of the horse.

Flat saddles or English saddles are called flat because they are so gently curved that the rider’s seat appears to be flat. Basically, there are three types of flat saddles – The forward seat or jumping saddle, the modified forward saddle, and the dressage saddle. The forward seat or jumping saddle is known for having flaps that stretch well over the horse’s shoulders. These types of saddles are perfect for open jumping riders. Modified forward saddles have flaps that do not extend far like in jumping saddles. These saddles are suited for ordinary riding, jumping, and hunting. The third type, dressage saddle is known for having a much deeper seat than the other two.

Saddle pads, head collars, bridles, and reins for my horse

August 14th, 2008

I shouldn’t have spent much money on Saddle Pads, Head Collars, Bridles, Reins, Breast Girths and Martingles. I brought every imaginable Equestrian Products for my horse. From Horse Boots, Horse Rugs, Blankets, Indoor / Outdoor Rugs, Anti-Sweat Sheets, and the list goes on! All this win-win enthusiasm of mine had turned out to be a complete fiasco.

I can’t believe my ill luck! Ricky wasn’t joking when he said, “Hey, Mike, if you race that nag once more, he’ll suffer a 7-lb penalty,” or “buddy, you carried overweight. Cut down on the plum man!”

Penalty was explained to me in the beginning of my horse jockey career. It is like this: if a race goes up for those of four-year-olds or more than that, which at the beginning of the season have not won any hurdle race…….and if they have won a hurdle race since the start of the season, they are to carry a 7-lb penalty. This penalty is the extra weight, most of the times flat thin sheets of lead are carried in pockets of the weight cloth that lies over the horse’s back. This weight is put under the number cloth and saddle. Steeplechase racing follow the penalty trend. It is the jockey who actually needs to carry the weight allotted to his horse. You also get weighed before and after a race.

Yes, it is true that I’m not totally ignorant, but sometimes your luck doesn’t click and you seem to forget important points. My race card (the one that shows the horse’s age and how much weight has been carried in the race) shows an F that means fell and a P that means pulled up and didn’t finish. But as they say in Hollywood- “The show must go on!” and I must move on, no matter what.
